While former Chicago White Sox great Frank Thomas expects to open his Big Hurt Brewhouse in about a month seven miles east on 22nd Street from York Road, the Oak Brook home in which the Hall of Famer used to live is on the market.
The new restaurant/brewhouse is located at 6801 W. Cermak Road in Berwyn. The former Thomas residence is at 3312 Midwest Road.
Thomas first took out a mortgage in 1993 for his Oak Brook home, which was completed in 1997. He sold the home in 2003 for $7.95 million, a record for the highest sale price for a home in the village, said Alex Starace, Chicago communications specialist for Redfin.
The asking price for the home, which has gone through foreclosure, is $2,499,900. The home still has Thomas’s original exercise equipment inside and a theater, “Hurtland Theater,” named after the former slugger’s nickname, The Big Hurt.
“It’s not in the greatest shape, said Steve Malik, the RE/Max Professionals Select agent handling the listing for the home. “It’s going to need some work, a lot of cosmetic work.”
Malik said that while having Thomas as the original owner and former resident of the home is interesting, it’s not likely to impact the purchase price.
“I think it’s a great conversation piece, but it won’t affect the value,” he said. “The property will bring what it’s worth.”
Malik said he expects considerable interest from people interested in buying the property.
The two-story gated home has 25,000-plus square feet on 3.3 acres with nine bedrooms, nine full and five half bathrooms and a basement that includes the home theater, basketball court, gym, dance floor/bar, and beauty salon. The garage has 18 parking spaces, and there are in-ground swimming pools and a pool house with a kitchen and baths.
